The Tanahu Raja (Descendent of Makunda Sen)
Excerpt taken from An Ethnohistorical Study of Bandipur by Linda L. IlitisThe Raja of Tanahu was extremely brave and cunning. He held his dominion longer than most contemporaries. He was particularly successful in defeating Prithvi Narayan Shah(1) of Gorkha in battles held on the tops of the cliffs in Bandipur. However, one time they agreed to have a battle along the banks of the river Marsyangdi at which no swords could be used. Prithvi Narayan Shah carefully hid his swords under the sand. The Tanahu Raja, however, came unarmed by way the agreed plan. For some time the battle raged on, with the Tanahu armies nearly crushing the Gorkha troops. Suddenly just as the Gorkhalis were about to lose, Prithvi order his men to dig up the swords and surround the Tanahu Raja and his army. The Tanahu Raja, in his anger toward the deceitful Prithvi Narayan Shah, vowed to never again look on the face of Prithvi Narayan. He went away to Devghat and faced away from Tanahu and Gorkha and died.
1. Prithvi Narayan Shah is the same Shah the Prithvi Highway is named after. This highway is taken to get to and from Kathmandu to Bandipur or Pokhara.
